Your Body on Trauma

Your Body on Trauma - trauma recovery

Do you ever feel like you’re falling apart at the seams?

When I was 30, I was complaining one day of some ailment and my mom laughed, calling me old.  I looked at her like she was a Martian.  30 is most certainly not old.

Even now at 47, I do not identify as ‘old’.  I don’t care that the doctor just told me last week that I have arthritis in my knees.  But I digress… that’s a rabbit hole for another day.

Today I want to talk to you about the energic impacts trauma has on you physically. Did you know that emotional trauma, a.k.a. complex trauma, can wreak havoc on your body?

Such things as….

  • Under/over weight
  • Chronic illness
  • Autoimmune
  • Mystery aches and pains
  • Frequent illnesses
  • Breaking bones
  • Hormone imbalances
  • PMS
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer

I could go on and on.

While there are often also more direct mind-body ways that trauma impacts us physically, perhaps the biggest connection is usually the most overlooked, which is: energy.

Stop and think about this for a moment.  Everything is energy.  Every atom.  Every proton, neutron, and electron.  Every ‘hard’ surface.  Well, that also includes the less tangible such as thoughts and emotions.

With that in mind, let’s remember that trauma is an invisible internal wound.

That wound has lots of thoughts and emotions tangled up in it and they carry loads of weight.  How many unhealed trauma wounds are you lugging around?  5?  10?  5000?

The truth is that we can’t unequivocally answer that.  However, we can get a sense of how trauma may be weighing us down by our quality of life.  On every level, mind, body and spirit, are you living the most empowered, impactful amazing life of your dreams?

If the answer is no, then to some degree, you are likely building your life on a foundation of unhealed trauma wounds and all the energetic weight they carry.

Just like obesity over time puts a strain on our heart, the energetic weight of unhealed trauma brings its own strains.  Being that it’s energy, it can impact us at every level: mind, body and spirit.

While some of these impacts may be permanent, many can be turned around.  And for the ones that might be permanent, you can learn healthy, holistic skills to better support you where you are so that you may still create that empowered, impactful amazing life of your dreams.

Where do you even begin?

Oh, how do I count the ways?

Many clients come to be feeling lost and dizzy from spinning in circles.  While there are innumerable ways to support yourself in creating an environment of healing, that also leaves most unsure of which options make the most sense for them.

To get started, consider which of the following words lights you up a bit or seems to draw you in somehow.

Mind

Body

Spirit

If more than one grabs at you, lean into the feelings until one seems to rise above.  Whichever one of these words holds a bit more allure for you might just give you a starting place.  It’s at least a thread to tug.

I’ve created a guide to support you in experimenting with different modalities, tools and practices.

Healing can be HARD work!  I strongly encourage you to invite a perspective of play.  Seriously.  PLAY.  You need to balance out the HARD and nothing is a lightening as PLAY (accept maybe humor so go have a good laugh too).

How can you play with a new tip?  How can you play with a new concept?  How about scheduling some playtime after doing the hard stuff?

Ok, now it’s your turn.  Grab your Wellness Toolbox and go PLAY!

With much love and many blessings,
