What is a Trauma Informed Coach?

What is a Trauma Informed Coach_ - trauma recovery

Trauma coaches or trauma recovery coaches are coaches who have chosen to work with people who have experienced trauma.  Let’s face it, we’ve all experienced trauma.  However, these coaches are communicating that they work with clients who specifically acknowledge or intuit that their life has been affected by trauma.  Trauma coaches may further niche by working with clients who’ve experienced particular types of trauma (child abuse; domestic abuse; addiction)

I refer to myself as a trauma informed life coach because I feel that phrasing better communicates precisely what I do.  As a trained life coach, I can work with any client on any topic.  I recognize that having been seriously impacted by trauma means that even after processing it all with a therapist, a client will find themselves cycling through that healing process again and may be triggered and in general face certain struggles that others don’t.

As a trauma informed coach, I help clients notice when they may be triggered; identify and avoid known triggers; develop tools and resources to work through challenges and all of that right along side of the topic at hand.  For example, I may be working with a client on improving their relationship with their spouse or working through inherent challenges of returning to school while maintaining a family or restructuring their business to obtain specific results.  See, that’s life, the topics can be all over the place.  I know that during each of those very different conversations, a client may become stuck and once we get to digging in, they may trace their stuckness back to a trauma incident.  Now they are cycling back through that healing process with a story they perhaps thought they were done with.  They may or may not become triggered.  They may have some work to do before or along side the issue we were originally addressing.

Also, as a trauma informed coach, I know that there are challenges particular to those who have undergone trauma.  I focus much of my work with folks who experienced emotional neglect/abuse as a child.  Key struggles they tend to have in common are those of identity, confidence and fulfilling their own wishes.  Thus, my Powerful You! Coaching Program was designed specifically to help my ideal client with the challenges they are facing.

No matter what you are looking for a life or business coach for, if you have experienced trauma, it may be worth considering working with a trauma informed coach to more safely avoid triggers and retraumatization.  People do not always see the depth of how their trauma is affecting them.  When you find yourself stuck in the same place again and again, there’s a good chance it can be linked back to trauma.  A trauma informed coach can help you see that connection so you can finally work through it and move on.
